This year, the ceremony collaborated with wine company SmartVine, which was the exclusive provider of beverages served to attendees. Christine Lusita attended the function as well, serving as spokesperson for SmartVine. In addition, the ceremonies introduced a new plant based menu, which stars had mixed reviews about.

The highlight of the Critics Choice Awards 2020 were both surprising and expected by audiences. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which is Quentin Tarantino’s ode to Tinseltown of the 1960s, won best picture over it’s contenders. The stars of the film, Leonardo DiCaprio and best supporting actor winner Brad Pitt, were both not in attendance, to the dismay of audiences. In addition, the Martin Scorsese mafia movie “The Irishman” was given an award for best acting ensemble, which featured Hollywood titans Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino. The talented Renee Zellweger also began her so far undefeated trek through the awards ceremony by picking up the Critics Choice Award for best actress. Lastly, Joaquin Phoenix gave a touching and emotional toast to his mother in his acceptance speech for best actor in the film “Joker.”

As the awards season progressed this year, the Golden Globes came and went, taking place on Janaury 5th. Usually an early predictor for the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes also had it’s share of interesting highlights. Brad Pitt continued his wins by earning best supporting actor, as did Joaquin Phoenix as best actor. The surprise of the event came from the war drama 1917, which has been heralded for it’s use of single takes and stars a cast of up-and-coming actors. The movie went on to win best picture, and also gave it’s director Sam Mendes the second Golden Globe award of his career. In addition to the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild awards were held on January 19th, where the now infamous reunion of ex-husband and wife and SAG award winners Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt occurred backstage.

This will all lead up to the final ceremony of the season, the 92nd Annual Academy Awards, which will be held the night of February 9, 2020. Many of the aforementioned stars and filmmakers will be competing for top prizes. The best picture contenders this year include “The Irishman,” “JoJo Rabbit,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Parasite,” “Joker,” “1917,” “Little Women,” “Marriage Story,” and “Ford V. Ferrari.”

Luckily, the Critics Choice Award started the awards season off right. This year has had, and will have, lots of great talent in the industry together under one roof. Whatever the final win and loss tally, it will definitely have been a fantastic awards season.
