“Well, that was different.” That is what people are saying about the Dirty Derby by the crazy guys and gals at Dirty Bird Golf, the irreverent makers of golf apparel, which is definitely not your grandpa’s gear. So, on a beautiful Southern California morning, 50 golfers of all levels of skills, 25 teams of 2 people playing the same hole simultaneously. This is not your typical golf tournament.
We have to admit, for the golf purist, this might not be something that you’d do every day, but you have to experience this at least once. The sight of 25 golf carts all heading for the same hole is something else. To see two people hitting their tee shots simultaneously (with various levels of proficiency) is unique, and let’s face it, much fun.
The format is pretty straightforward (well, stay with us…) 2 players per team, alternate shot format – One team member will hit the tee shot. Once all the teams have hit, all 25 teams will drive out together. Locate your team ball, and your partner hits the second shot. Continue alternating shots until the hole is finished. Each team is guaranteed two holes. Starting on hole 3, the worst three scores on will be eliminated.
It’s not for the faint of heart, but something is compelling about it; we don’t know if it’s the sight of people all congregating toward the hole, or maybe it’s the effect of a few adult beverages, the result is a LOT of fun.
