Riviera. A majestic place. It is where legends are born. Since 1926, the Riviera Country Club has been one of golf’s favorite destinations. A long list of tournaments have taken place at the famed course, among them; the 1948 US Open, the 1983 and 1995 PGA Championships, the 1998 US Senior Open, and the 2017 US Amateur. Ben Hogan (among others) has won here, and it continues to be a favorite among the Hollywood crowd, where several prominent celebrities are members of this highly private and prestigious club.
The yearly stop in the City of Angels for the PGA Tour, the Genesis Invitational (bumped up in status from last year’s “open”) featured a star-powered field including names like Rory, Brooks, Phil, and of course, the host, Tiger Woods.
For Doug McLaughlin, Nobleman Magazine’s Founder and Editor-in-Chief, 2020 marked his second year in a row as a participant in the pro-am.
We were in luck with perfect weather this year (as opposed to the deluge of last year) and Doug was paired up with tour player, Kevin Tway, who in 2019, earned his first career victory at the Safeway Open, allowing him to advance to the FedExCup Playoffs for the third consecutive season. After an eventful morning, the time came to step up to the intimidating first hole, in front of a large gallery, where Doug experienced Riviera’s fury right on the first tee shot. His drive landed slightly off the fairway, which led to a fairway bunker, before ultimately making a bit of a high score.
On the bright side, the round was just beginning, Doug’s round improved with a few key shots, with everyone having a great time, you are at Riviera after all. Before you know it, the foursome was standing on the 18th green finishing on a good note. As of last year, it was a wonderful day, and we can’t wait for next year.
